We are the nation’s both CTC and Orthodox Tea specialist, with a passion for everything that makes a quality brew. Since Kalubowitiyana CTC Tea operation commenced we have been scouring the globe by manufacturing thick coloury CTC grades for world famous best blends for everyone at home to enjoy.
Kalubowitiyana Tea Factory Ltd (KTFL) was incorporated on the 30th of September 1992 as a public Company fully owned by the Government of Sri Lanka and functioning under the ministry of plantation. It began commercial operations with the commencement of manufacturing at the newly built CTC Tea Factory located in Kalubowitiyana Morawaka on 1st August 1994. CTC Tea Factory was built with the assistance of Indian Line of Credit. Similarly the Derangala Tea Factory in Derangala Morawaka was re-built, again with the same credit facility, and commenced manufacturing of Orthodox Teas in March 2000. Company acquired Hiniduma Hills Tea Factory in Neluwa and Manikdiwela Tea Factory in Manikdiwela, Pilimathalawa from Tea Shakthi Fund on lease to its network on the years 2012 and 2015, thus increased the total production to 1703 MT.

How Is Tea Made- All About the Process

PLUCKING
The green leaf is harvested on a regular basis at intervals ranging from 5 days to 8 days from each field.

WITHERING
No sooner it is received at the factory, the leaf is weighed and spread on troughs.

ROLLING
Is the process by which the leaf is twisted and the leaf cell walls ruptured to bring the juices to the surface of the leaf

FERMENTATION
Of the tea juices is an essential process in the manufacture of black tea.

DRYING
he primary objective of drying is the extraction of moisture and the arresting of fermentation. The fermented leaf contains from 45% to 50% moisture.

GRADING (SIFTING)
The fired teas after cooling are graded / sifted according to size and shape, as the trade demands.
