Since the commencement of the Kalubowitiyana CTC Tea operation, we have been spreading our reach globally by manufacturing thick coloury CTC grades for renowned, quality blends for everyone to enjoy.
Kalubowitiyana Tea Factory Ltd (KTFL) was incorporated on the 30th of September 1992 as a Public Company fully owned by the Government of Sri Lanka and functioning under the Ministry of Plantation Industries. It began commercial operations with the commencement of manufacturing at the newly built CTC Tea Factory located in Kalubowitiyana, Morawaka on 1st August 1994. The Derangala Tea Factory in Derangala Morawaka was re-built under the Kalubowitiyana umbrella, and commenced manufacturing of Orthodox Teas in March 2000. Company acquired the Hiniduma Hills Tea Factory in Neluwa and Menikdiwela Tea Factory in Manikdiwela, Pilimathalawa to its network in the years 2012 and 2015, increasing the total production capacity to over 1700 MT p.a..

How Is Tea Made
All About The Process

The green leaf is harvested on a regular basis at intervals ranging from 5 days to 8 days from each field.

No sooner it is received at the estate , the leaf is weighed and spread on troughs.

The primary objective of drying is the extraction of moisture and the arresting of fermentation. The fermented leaf contains from 45% to 50% moisture.

The Kalubowitiyana PF1 Grade received a record-breaking price of Rs. 3250 in 2022 at the Colombo Tea Auction and is a staple in buyers' blends globally.
99% of our premium-quality tea is sold through the Colombo Tea Auction where we are net with a vast demand and receive record-breaking prices. This enables us to provide our tea smallholders with excellent rates for their harvests, with Kalubowitiyana Tea having paid the highest recorded price fore green leaf kilo.
Our teas are well received among exporters, having been exported to many prime tea brewing destinations worldwide.

CTC Products - (Cut, Tear & Curl)
A larger size leaf with bold round particles giving a full bodied bright tea.
A smaller size leaf giving a strong tasting Tea, useful grade for tea bags.
Fine granular particles that bring out the optimum strength and body, ideal for commercial brewing.
Orthodox Products
Similar to the BOP leaf but firm leaf and consisting of a few tips.
A typical low country semi-leaf tippy tea with a full bodied sweet brew.
A whole leaf tea with an abundance of long tips. Exquisite mildly caramel sweet liquor.
A popular leaf size which helps to bring out a good balance of taste and strength.
A well twisted semi leaf tea generally from the low country, with a mild malty taste.
